Watling Street was an important route from the north into London along which the body of Eleanor of Castile, wife of Edward I was transported from Lincoln to Westminster Abbey in 1290. The journey took 12 days and at each overnight stop, a wooden cross was erected where the funeral procession stopped including one at Dunstable. Later the wooden crosses were replaced by ornate stone crosses but sadly the Dunstable cross no longer exists.
